- If you have never attended Andrea Leers’ course, the New American Courthouse, at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, I’m sorry to say you will have to wait another year. The July 17-19 course, attended by professionals from across the country, covered the evolution of courthouse design; urban design forces shaping the courthouse; planning for the needs of judges, court staff, and the public; design strategies for the multi-courtroom courthouse; and the interaction of architect, users, and project administrators in the design process. Highlights included tours of the Lawrence and Moakley courthouses as well as presentations by Leslie Shepherd, chief architect of the GSA, Ed Feiner, former chief architect of the GSA, and U.S. District Court Judge William Skretny.
- In Washington D.C. on June 1, the GSA invited professionals for a review and national conversation on federal courthouse design under the GSA award-winning Design Excellence Program. The day-long event included an assessment of the courthouse portfolio by Pulitzer-prize wining architecture critic Robert Campbell; a presentation by GSA Architecture Fellow Thomas Gordon Smith and U.S. District Court Judge Michael R. Hogan of the new Morphosis-designed courthouse in Eugene, Oregon; and a keynote address by Justice Stephen Breyer. The day concluded with an open discussion on how the design excellence program can best meet the needs of the federal judiciary and the American people to create appropriate and inspiring federal courthouses in the 21st century.

Architectural Education Committee
|
| |
|
This network — of educators, practitioners, and others interested industry professionals and students interested in college and university architectural education — is centered on the assumption that if sustainable/integrative design is to be practiced by our profession, students of all ages need to have had some exposure to the applicable methods and ideas. In broad terms, the initial question for the committee is this: given the implications of anthropomorphically-induced climate disruption, what should future design professionals know about, understand and/or have mastered by the time they receive their various degrees? Other issues/topics emerge from that basic question, including which parts of today’s design training work, and which ones do not.

BSA Task Force to End Homelessness merges with Architecture for Humanity Boston
The BSA Task Force to End Homelessness (TFEH) and the Boston chapter of Architecture for Humanity (AFHB) have merged and will continue working together under the AFHB umbrella. The two groups have collaborated in the past on several initiatives, including projects with Shelter Inc., Bikes Not Bombs, and TEEN LEEP.
The TFEH was founded in 1986 by John Wilson FAIA to address the issue of homelessness in Boston and the architectural community’s lack of response to the problem. Since then, the group has provided pro bono planning, design, outreach, and advocacy services to non-profit and other community groups grappling with the problem of homelessness. In 1996, Wilson was awarded the prestigious national Whitney Young Jr. Award for his work. I joined the group in 1990 and became a co-chair in 2004.
Architecture for Humanity, founded in 1999 by Cameron Sinclair and Kate Stohr, was created to promote architectural and design solutions to global, social, and humanitarian crises through competitions, workshops, educational forums, partnerships with aid organizations, and other activities.
The local component, Architecture for Humanity Boston, was organized in 2004 by Wentworth Institute of Technology instructors Lora Kim and Jay Weber, Harvard GSD students Hye-Young Chung and Emily Farnham, designer Niveen Sayeed, and me. In 2005, we created a competition on Emergency Housing Ideas and sent the entries to the national AFH and exhibited them at Build Boston 2005. AFHB is currently run by five board members including Kim, Chung, Farnham, and Fatima Sayeed.
Since that initial collaboration, these two groups have continued to work so well together that a marriage between them seemed natural. We welcome the participation of everyone—professionals, design instructors, students, architects, engineers, BSA members and allies and nonmembers. AFHB meets on the second Thursday of each month (except August and December) at 6:30 pm at The Architects Building, 52 Broad Street in downtown Boston. With questions, thoughts or ideas, write Michael McHugh at michael@afhb.org. For more information, visit www.afhb.org or www.architectureforhumanity.org.

Urban Design Committee
|
| |
|
Boston's development and design are always primary issues for us and this committee is the key actor. All urban design issues are among this committee's concerns: design-review, BRA consultation, the future of a great city. The committee typically establishes "focus teams" (smaller groups of members and allies) to focus on single, significant projects such as the redevelopment of City Hall Plaza, the Boston seaport redevelopment proposal, Mass. Pike air-rights development, etc. This group meets on the third Thursday of every month at 6:00 pm at the BSA. For more information, call/write Peter Smith, Assoc. AIA (617-233-6071) or John Stebbins AIA (617-492-7000).

Volunteers Network
|
| |
|
The profession in Boston thrives in part because BSA members make it thrive by serving in volunteer civic and professional roles. The BSA thrives for the same reason. To volunteer or to help supervise volunteers (part-time, once-in-a-while, full-time, etc.) in the BSA office or in BSA programs, visit architects.org/volunteer or contact Conor MacDonald (617-951-1433x221).
