BSA Task Force to End Homelessness merges with Architecture for Humanity Boston
The BSA Task Force to End Homelessness (TFEH) and the Boston chapter of Architecture for Humanity (AFHB) have merged and will continue working together under the AFHB umbrella. The two groups have collaborated in the past on several initiatives, including projects with Shelter Inc., Bikes Not Bombs, and TEEN LEEP.
The TFEH was founded in 1986 by John Wilson FAIA to address the issue of homelessness in Boston and the architectural community’s lack of response to the problem. Since then, the group has provided pro bono planning, design, outreach, and advocacy services to non-profit and other community groups grappling with the problem of homelessness. In 1996, Wilson was awarded the prestigious national Whitney Young Jr. Award for his work. I joined the group in 1990 and became a co-chair in 2004.
Architecture for Humanity, founded in 1999 by Cameron Sinclair and Kate Stohr, was created to promote architectural and design solutions to global, social, and humanitarian crises through competitions, workshops, educational forums, partnerships with aid organizations, and other activities.
The local component, Architecture for Humanity Boston, was organized in 2004 by Wentworth Institute of Technology instructors Lora Kim and Jay Weber, Harvard GSD students Hye-Young Chung and Emily Farnham, designer Niveen Sayeed, and me. In 2005, we created a competition on Emergency Housing Ideas and sent the entries to the national AFH and exhibited them at Build Boston 2005. AFHB is currently run by five board members including Kim, Chung, Farnham, and Fatima Sayeed.
Since that initial collaboration, these two groups have continued to work so well together that a marriage between them seemed natural. We welcome the participation of everyone—professionals, design instructors, students, architects, engineers, BSA members and allies and nonmembers. AFHB meets on the second Thursday of each month (except August and December) at 6:30 pm at The Architects Building, 52 Broad Street in downtown Boston. With questions, thoughts or ideas, write Michael McHugh at architectmchugh@gmail.com. For more information, visit www.afhb.org or www.architectureforhumanity.org.

Boston's development and design are always primary issues for us and this committee is the key actor. All urban design issues are among this committee's concerns: design-review, BRA consultation, the future of a great city. The committee typically establishes "focus teams" (smaller groups of members and allies) to focus on single, significant projects such as the redevelopment of City Hall Plaza, the Boston seaport redevelopment proposal, Mass. Pike air-rights development, etc. This group meets on the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 pm at the BSA to view and discuss presentations about interesting urban design projects in Boston and around the world. For more information, call/write Peter Smith, Assoc. AIA (617-233-6071) or John Stebbins AIA (617-492-7000).

Who We Are
As a network of the Boston Society of Architects, Women In Design Boston celebrates and encourages the success & leadership roles of women in the design community of the greater Boston area. Whether you practice architecture, interiors, landscape, graphic, or industrial design, are an independent artist, or are currently advancing your design degree, we all share a like-minded passion for innovation & strive for continued inspiration in our lives, work, and through those relationships we form with other women. WID’s interdisciplinary nature enhances our commitment to professional development, mentoring and community engagement and creates an accessible avenue for discourse and collegiality. Our networking platforms, professional conferences, and involvement in the annual Women In Design Conference at Build Boston highlight current projects, lectures & design issues, while showcasing the wide-ranging talents this eclectic & fun group of females has to offer.

Women Principals Network
|
| |
|
There are approximately 300 women principals in Boston-area architecture firms and all those interested gather quarterly for camaraderie and to explore topics ranging from firm leadership, mentoring, design and issues of the advancement of women to leadership roles in the profession.
In September 2009, the Boston Women Principals Network organized a national AIA Women's Leadership Summit in Chicago attended by 150 women from all over the country. Past AIA president Kate Schwennsen FAIA provided the keynote address, and panel discussions and breakout sessions were tailored to the concerns affecting women in the profession today. Locally, our group hosted sessions in 2009 to discuss staffing during challenging times, firm leadership structure, how to achieve diversity and design inspiration. We also hosted a jump-start event to the BSA Women In Design Network mentoring program.
Meetings are typically on Friday mornings and are hosted by a different firm each quarter.
For more information, contact Jeanne Lukenda ASLA or Janet Ross AIA.
