John E. Fernandez is an Associate Professor and member of the Building Technology Program in the Department of Architecture at MIT. He has focused on materials and the physical components of building assemblies and systems, culminating in the book "Material Architecture: emergent materials for innovative buildings and ecological construction". Currently, Professor Fernandez is engaged in articulating the concepts of contemporary construction ecology, identifying the consumption profile of the existing building stock while formulating design strategies that facilitate reuse and recycling. He aims to improve material and energy networks by identifying building metabolisms in terms of resources consumed, as well as fostering collaboration between industry and academia. |
