Committee Hearing on Interior Design Licensing
On Tuesday, July 10, a panel of BSA members submitted oral and
written testimony before the Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure in opposition to  SB 178 , a practice act that would create a board of registration for interior designers and allow "Registered Interior Designers" to stamp construction documents, and suggested the alternative outlined in  HB 341 , which would certify interior designers without creating a board or allowing interior designers to stamp drawings. The architects were well-represented, as dozens of architects attended the hearing to show their support for the BSA's position, many wearing "NO ON SB 178" buttons.

Many interior designers testified in support of SB 178, including the
Mass. Interior Design Coalition (sponsors of SB178), representatives from ASID and IIDA, and local interior designers and interior design students.

The Committee will hold an executive session at a later date, after which they will make their recommendations on both SB 178 and HB 341. This means that now is the time to contact your legislators, before the Committee makes their recommendation.

What you can do to stop this legislation

Step 1

Write to your legislators and ask them to oppose Senate Bill 178 and consider HB 341 as an alternative.

Find your legislators – Click on each legislator’s name for contact information

Sample letter to legislators –- It is important that you copy the BSA on all correspondence to legislators – abaldwin@architects.org, 617-951-0845 (fax) or Andrew Baldwin, BSA, 52 Broad St. Boston 02109

Step 2

Follow up with a phone call to your legislators.

Talking points on SB 178 and HB 341

Be sure to tell the BSA who you talked to and the results of the conversation – this includes whether the Representative/Senator will support our position and whether they will testify, either in person or in writing.

Step 3

Meet with your legislator.

Massachusetts General Court directory – call your legislator’s office to schedule an appointment

Email abaldwin@architects.org to have the BSA set up an appointment for you

Inform the BSA of who you met with and the outcome of the meeting. This includes whether the Representative/Senator will support our position.

Step 4

Tell your colleagues about the proposed interior design legislation and encourage them to join the effort.
