The Aga Khan Award for Archtecture
Deadline: rolling, award made every two years
Open to: projects designed for or used by Muslim communities, in part or in whole, wherever they are located
The award recognises examples of architectural excellence that encompass contemporary design, social housing, community improvement and development, restoration, re-use, and area conservation, as well as landscaping and environmental issues. Through its efforts, the Award seeks to identify and encourage building concepts that successfully address the needs and aspirations of societies in which Muslims have a significant presence.

AIA Central Massachusetts Scholarship
Open to: High-school students who are currently applicants to any U.S. college or university architecture program and undergraduate college students currently enrolled in any U.S. college or university architecture program providing the applicant is currently a resident of central Massachusetts or is currently attending high school or college in central Massachusetts. The application period is January - March each year. Scholarships are awarded in May.

AIA/AAF Scholarship for Advanced Study and Research

Open to: those who have earned a professional degree
This award supports projects by those who have already earned a professional degree. Scholarships are not given for tuition assistance for an advanced degree, but are based on the merits of a project proposal. Awards range from $1,000 to $2,500 and are issued to the individual and the U.S. university under whose direction the project will be carried out.

AIA/AAF Scholarship for First Professional Degree Candidates

Open to: students in one of the final two years of a professional degree program
The applications are only available from the departments of architecture at NAAB- and RAIC-accredited programs. The dean or a designated scholarship committee selects applicants. The applicants are required to write a personal essay, file a financial aid need analysis, provide a drawing, transcripts and class ranking, and three letters of recommendation.

Arcus Endowment Awards Program

An annual awards program sponsored by the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design that is intended to foster an awareness of the role of Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender/Queer (LGBTQ) communities in the creation of the built environment. The program focuses on the history of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and built environment disciplines. Arnold W. Brunner Grant

A $15,000 grant for advanced study in any area of architectural investigation which will effectively contribute to the knowledge, teaching or practice of the art and science of architecture. BSA Research Grants in Architecture

The Boston Society of Architects has initiated a new program to promote research in architecture. With a focus on design as research, this program encourages inquiry not only on specific research topics but also on how design itself (the design process and the results of design) constitutes research as well. This program encourages and supports the investigation of the definition of architecture research, actual research projects and the dissemination of the results of these efforts. Grants in amounts up to $10,000 to individuals, collaborative teams or organizations (and up to $2,000 for students) are planned.

Frederick P. Rose Architectural Fellowship

The Fellowship creates partnerships between recent architecture school graduates and community-based organizations in the service of low- and moderate-income communities. Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. The Loeb Fellowship

The Loeb Fellowship was established in 1970 through the generosity of the
late John L. Loeb, Harvard College '24. Based at the Graduate School of
Design, the program offers ten annual postprofessional awards for
independent study at Harvard. Through the Fellowship, participants have
access to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of

The Lyceum Fellowship
The Lyceum Fellowship was established in 1985 to advance development of the next generation of talent by creating a vehicle for stimulating perceptive reasoning and inspiring creative thought in our field. The MacDowell Colony

The Colony's mission is to provide an environment in which creative artists are free to pursue their work without interruption. The Rotch Travelling Scholarship

Open to: U.S. citizens under the age of 35 on January 1 of the competition year, and must have a degree from an accredited U.S. school of architecture and one year of full-time professional experience in a Massachusetts architecture firm as of January 1
Since 1883, the Rotch Scholar has been chosen annually through a two-stage design competition. The first stage is a weekend-long preliminary competition that requires entrants to create a design in response to a specific architectural problem posed by the scholarship committee. The preliminary jury then evaluates the entrants’ designs in terms of their creative potential to determine which candidates are best qualified to fulfill the goals of the program. To apply and to be eligible for the Scholarship, ($35,000 first prize; $15,000 second prize) candidates must be U.S. citizens under the age of 35 on January 1 of the competition year, and must have a degree from an accredited U.S. school of architecture and one year of full-time professional experience in a Massachusetts architecture firm as of January 1 of the competition year or a degree from an accredited Massachusetts school of architecture and one year of full-time professional experience in any architecture firm. The one year of full-time professional experience must be completed by the first day of the competition year.

RTKL Traveling Fellowship

This fellowship was established by a $25,000 contribution to The American Architectural Foundation by the architecture firm RTKL. One $2,500 fellowship is awarded to a student submitting the winning proposal outlining a foreign itinerary which is directly relevant to his or her education goals. SOM Foundation Traveling Fellowships

These Traveling Fellowships aim to identify and nurture emerging talent through prestigious awards and traveling study grants to students of Architecture, Design, Urban Design, and Structural Engineering. Steedman Fellowship in Architecture International Design Competition

Open to: graduates of an accredited school of architecture, and be currently employed in, or have completed at least one year of practical experience in the office of a practicing architect
The Steedman Fellowship, granted since 1925, is awarded biannually on the basis of an International Design Competition. It enables graduates of accredited professional degree programs in architecture around the world to travel for architectural research and study in foreign countries for a period of nine months. The $30,000 Fellowship is awarded to the winner of the Steedman International Design Competition. The award is based on the quality of the selected winner's competition design entry, but the quality of his/her research proposal is also considered.
