PIB Migration

Update on the speakers' experiences to-date in investigating PIB migration, Matthew C. Carlton AIA, Laura K. Bashaw, and Francesco J. Spagna will discuss field techniques associated with surveying insulating glass units (IGUs) with migration, testing used to determine causes of PIB migration, test findings, and the overall state of the industry regarding PIB migration.

Matthew C. Carlton AIA, LEED AP is registered architect in the building technology department in the Boston office of consulting engineering firm Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH). He has more than 15 years of experience focusing on the analysis and design, investigation and rehabilitation of the building enclosure, including roofing, glass curtain wall, wall cladding, below grade and plaza waterproofing, and moisture interior flooring consulting. Mr. Carlton has published many technical articles and provides presentations across the United States, all geared toward building enclosure design details and material compatibility.

Laura Bashaw joined Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. (SGH) in 2008 as part of the Building Technology group. She is experienced in building envelope investigations, construction litigation support, building envelope repair designs, and subsequent construction administration. She has been involved in investigations and design of repairs for low slope roofing, windows, curtain walls, EIFS cladding, brick veneer, mass masonry walls, steep slope roofing, and plaza waterproofing.

Francesco Spagna is experienced in the performance of building envelope investigations, condition assessments, construction litigation support, expert witness services, building envelope design-assist, building envelope repair design and subsequent construction administration, and peer reviews of building-envelope designs. He has been involved in the investigation and remedial design of curtain walls, windows, roofing, EIFS and stucco claddings, brick and stone veneer, plaza waterproofing, and below-grade waterproofing. His responsibilities as a construction administrator have included monitoring construction for conformance to contract documents, providing technical support in the field and office, designing detail modifications during the construction phase, and reviewing shop drawings and submittals.
