Urban Design Committee
Connect Kendall Square
Anticipating over a billion dollars of new development in the Kendall Square area in the near future, the City of Cambridge held a national design competition to create a framework plan that will guide open space design and connectivity strategies. The winning entry by a team led by Richard Burck Associates, combines two related design efforts, the first being to CREATE Kendall Square and the second to CONNECT Kendall Square. The resulting Framework Plan freshly interprets the hydrologic history of Kendall Square by establishing water as a basis of identity, sustainability and circulation.
Using water both literally and metaphorically, the Framework seeks to weaken the scar tissue of mid-century redevelopment by allowing a finer grained, dendritic circulation pattern to emerge.
