Learning By Design - Home

Learning By Design in Massachusetts is a statewide K-12 architecture and design education program. Since 1999 over 15,000 children, educators and designers have taken part in LBD:MA architecture and design activities.

What's new

LBD:MA is thrilled to announce that we have received a significant grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to fund our Architecture: Learning by Design program.  Architecture: Learning By Design is a comprehensive two-year immersion into Art and STEM (Science, Technology/Engineering and Mathematics). Schools in three Massachusetts cities (Boston, Holyoke and New Bedford) will participate in the program which uses the power of local architecture as a catalyst for learning in critical academic subject areas.

 Arch LBD Program Summary

Kids Design a Sustainable Future is a sustainable architecture and design curriculum that engages students, teachers and architects in exploring the connections between people, places and nature.  This interdisciplinary, project-based program uses interactive slide shows, Massachusetts green building case studies and hands-on activities to explore the themes of Site, Sun, Wind, Water and Building Materials.

 KDSF Program Summary

Our Mission:

LBD:MA draws on the power of architecture and design to build within each child an essential structure for learning and creating that will inform every endeavor in their lives. Today’s children are the designers of a better tomorrow.

We will fulfill this mission by:

  • bringing design activities focusing on people, places and spaces into the heart of K-12 learning
  • enabling students, teachers and architects to learn and design together
  • building a strong community dedicated to K-12 Architecture and Design Education

Vision:

LBD:MA believes that the design process will be integral to the way every teacher teaches and every student learns.  All children will value their connection to the architecture of their world and develop a sense of stewardship for sustainable, well-designed environments.

As a proponent of project-based learning, LBD:MA knows that children have the curiosity to form their own design questions, the creative ability to find their own solutions, and the higher-level thinking skills to communicate their ideas about those solutions. When we give our future designers, engineers, builders, decision-makers, and members of the global community the opportunity to communicate their ideas about their built and natural environments, we all benefit.

LBD:MA offers:

  • Children’s Design Workshops
  • Professional Development
  • Curriculum Consultation
  • Biennial Conference
  • Resource Website

LBD:MA thanks the Boston Society of Architects for hosting this web page.
