Jury Overview

A common theme could be found across all projects: an intensive focus on reinforcing equitable community and well-being of the end users. That said, the projects rising to the fore were those contending with sustainability more broadly using the Framework for Design Excellence. Even with a challenging, energy-intensive typology, several projects were able to make great strides in reducing the project’s impact by taking thoughtful measures to reduce energy use and resource intensity. The awarded projects also performed exceptionally well in regards to well-being and equitable community building. Of particular note was the Honor Award-winning Boston Children’s Brookline, which skillfully reflected the needs of the patients served in the architecture. Despite the technological requirements of this typology, in the future we would like to see architects push to explore higher performance in the criterias of energy and resource use to unlock sustainable potential in health care spaces.
