The Accessible Home: A Presentation by Deborah Pierce

Deborah Pierce, an architect and the author of The Accessible Home: Designing for All Ages and Abilities discussed several challenges that designers face when making a living environment more accommodating to individuals with limited abilities.  She reviewed some of the trends that are making “aging in place” home owners a larger part of the residential community and demographic trends reflecting the expanding aging boomer population.  Starting with the principles of universal design she expanded the conversation by asking participants to consider design modifications they might make for specific areas of the house and for specific common deficits including vision and hearing.  This lead to a presentation of some of the case studies in her book.

The book will be published in October.  Watch this site for a link to preview material for the book.
