Carbon Pricing: A Conversation with Senator Barrett

On Tuesday, November 20 at 11am-12pm at BSA Space, AIA Massachusetts has the rare opportunity to host Senator Mike Barrett, one of the most influential MA lawmakers leading the charge for “first in the nation” major environmental legislation.

Senator Mike Barrett (D- Lexington) is State Senator for nine Massachusetts communities — Bedford, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Concord, Lincoln, Waltham, Weston, and large parts of Lexington and Sudbury. He serves as Senate Chair of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy.Senator Barrett authored Senate Bill S.1821 “An Act Combating Climate Change” which passed the MA Senate in June 2018 with broad support and co-sponsors, making the Massachusetts Senate the first legislative body in the U.S., either federal or state, to approve revenue-neutral fees as a carbon pricing option.

At BSA Space, the Senator will discuss:
•    His view on the importance of a carbon fee;
•    How his thinking on the issue has evolved over the last couple of legislative sessions;
•    The similarities and differences between his bill and Rep. Benson’s carbon pricing bill;
•    His view of the politics in getting either bill enacted here in MA;
•    What specific suggestions he has on how architects can help pass the bill;
•    Insights from his recent participation in the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco.

Don’t miss this chance to speak directly with Senator Barrett and learn the details of this critical, far-reaching proposal which would affect the building and transportation sectors and all Massachusetts residents.
