Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais

We are honored to have Jim Ansara, Founder & Chairman of Shawmut Design and Construction, Philanthropist, Volunteer, and Director of Design and Construction for Partners In Health, and numerous other titles, present the recently completed Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais, in Mirebalais, Haiti.

In 2009, Jim visited Haiti with Dr. Paul Farmer, one of the founders of Partners in Health, and began consulting on the planning and development of a new 100 bed community hospital.  Just as they were about to break ground on the project in January of 2010, a major earthquake hit Haiti that caused catastrophic death and destruction.  Within weeks, Jim stepped into the role of Director of Design and Construction and the program was revised to be a 320 bed National Teaching Hospital and the first tertiary care hospital in the country.

Jim will talk to us about the healthcare system in Haiti; the challenges of creating a hospital project in places like Haiti that have extreme resource constrictions along with natural disasters like the 2010 earthquake. He will also share some important lessons learned for moving forward with the next project.

Partners in Health (PIH) was founded in Boston in 1987 by Jim Kim, Ophelia Dahl, Paul Farmer, Todd McCormack, and Thomas J. White as an organization to deliver health care to the residents of Haiti's mountainous Central Plateau region. In the 25 years since then, PIH has expanded in Haiti's Artibonite and Central Plateau regions, and launched additional projects around the world.

It promises to be an inspiring and informative evening, so please join us!
