Meeting 006 – High Tech / Low Tech

Our sixth quarterly meeting was in the Project+Project format*. Phil Colleran, ALSA, Principal at CRJA-IBI Group, and Pedro Sifre, PE, Principal at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc., shared their personal and professional experiences with the design of sustainable technologies in various cultural and technological contexts. Project examples came from China and Pakistan and illustrated the importance of choosing technologies that are culturally and economically sustainable, as well as resilient. A premise explored was that the latest technologies advocated in developed countries are not necessarily feasible in developing nations because of resource or local skill limitations, and adapting and improving more indigenous techniques can be equally sustainable.

  • Sustainable technologies
  • Labor markets
  • Social Networks
  • Resource evaluation
