Forty years ago the perception most Americans had of hospital design probably came from a very limited number of sources: their local hospital and a couple of television programs such Marcus Welby, MD and General Hospital.
Even at the turn of the last century when there had been significant advances in healthcare design, hospitals were still viewed as not much more than an endless number of long sterile corridors and double patient rooms painted in battleship grey or institutional green. This presentation will focus on the evolution of hospital design in television and movies—how it has changed and what those changes may mean for those of us who design hospitals, those of us who hire designers, and the community of patients.
Through the use of video clips and other imagery, this presentation will examine the intersection of media versions of hospitals and popular culture, including aspects of power (between patients, physicians, and administration), greed and finance (how does architecture reveal an attitude towards money in medicine), and notions of the place of the hospital in modern America.
Jennifer Aliber FAIA, FACHA, LEED AP and Angela Watson FAIA, LEED AP will be presenting on this thought-provoking topic.
