The Massachusetts College of Art (MassArt) Art Museum -- formerly known as the Bakalar & Paine Galleries at MassArt -- opened last February under its new name. A teaching museum, the facility is intended to operate as a "cultural laboratory" where visitors can view makers in action and explore the power of art.
In the capable hands of designLAB architects, the 1906 structure that has housed the gallery complex for many years was dramatically transformed to support the new museum. A plaza was created along Huntington Ave to afford the museum a direct entrance from the street, with a new lobby. The interior includes staff offices and a new classroom space, with state-of-the-art temperature- and humidity control throughout. The architects' presentation will review the genesis and evolution of the project, sharing the technical challenges and the solutions pursued.
Our featured presenters from designLAB architects will be Sam Batchelor AIA, Partner (and active member of the BSA Knowledge Communities) and Erick McGartland, designer and Project Architect.
