Grants 2011
The BSA Foundation, (formerly the Boston Foundation for Architecture), is pleased to announce its 2011 grant awards. These grants help underwrite community-based K-12 and other educational programs that focus on elevating public awareness of the planning, design, and construction of our communities. The 2011 recipients and the contact person for each are:
Asian CDC (Boston) -- $2,500 to support Chinatown Community Walking Tours and engage local youth in planning for Chinatown's future by increasing awareness of urban planning and design elements, both physical and social. (Vivien Wu, 617-482-2380)
Boston Preservation Alliance (Boston) -- $4,000 to support the creation of print and web resources to inform congregations and property managers about best practices in assessment, preservation, and renovation of historic religious buildings. (Sarah Kelly, 617-367-2458)
Common Boston (Boston) -- $2,000 to support Common Build, a design-build competition benefiting community-based nonprofits, as a central feature of the 2012 Common Boston neighborhood and design festival (Heather MacLean, 617-452-6436)
Discovery Museum (Acton) -- $3,000 to support the development of Dream Green School Programs, specialized hands-on activities for elementary students around the theme of green design. (Sarah Hetherington, 978-264-4200)
Energy Necklace (Newton and New Bedford) -- $5,000 to support a curriculum focused on the environment and renewable energy and delivered through a hands-on, collaborative process of designing and building energy sculptures. (Susan Israel, 617-964-8483)
Hawthorne Youth and Community Center (Roxbury) -- $4,000 to support the Make Ours Green! project, in which local youth learn about green technology and create an exhibit to share with the community. (Samantha Sadd, 617-427-0613)
Massachusetts College of Art and Design (Boston) -- $4,000 to support gallery learning programs and materials for a 2012 exhibition on architecture and site-specific art. (India Clark, 617-879-7336)
Old North Church (Boston) -- $4,000 to support History Mystery, an education program that enables youth to explore Boston's oldest for a unique learning experience in colonial history and Georgian style architecture. (Robert Damon, 617-523-6676)
South Boston Catholic (Boston) -- $1,000 to support Meet the Architects, an expansion of an art education unit on architecture, which will focus on four major architects and culminate in a community exhibit. (Deborah Putnam, 617-268-2326)
Preservation Worcester (Worcester) -- $3,000 to support Seeing Worcester Architecture, an architecture-education program for elementary students at the Worcester Arts Magnet School. (Susan McDaniel Ceccacci, 508-754-8760)
Urban Neighborhood Design Alliance (Boston) -- $5,000 to support City/Build, which introduces high school students to architecture, design and construction through classes led by professionals in coordination with real building projects. (David Silverman, 617-426-5401)
