Grants 2013
The BSA Foundation, (formerly the Boston Foundation for Architecture), is pleased to announce its 2013 grant awards. These grants help underwrite community-based K-12 and other educational programs that focus on elevating public awareness of the planning, design, and construction of our communities. The 2013 recipients and the contact person for each are:
Asian CDC (Boston) -- $2,500 to support A-VOYCE, a summer youth leadership program that teaches basic concepts in planning and design and produces products to educate the community. (Janelle Chan, 617-482-2380)
Boston Family Boat Building (Boston) -- $4,000 to support experimental learning for low-income BPS students through boatbuilding, reinforcing core academic knowledge and skills. (Katy Schramm, 617-428-0155)
Co+Build/Wentworth Institute of Technology (Boston) -- $5,000 to support a collaborative, community driven project that pairs Wentworth students and faculty with neighborhood building projects in Mission Hill, Fenway and Roxbury. (Erik Miller, 617-989-4933)
Common Boston (Boston) -- $2,400 to support Common Build, a design-build competition benefiting community-based nonprofits, as a central feature of the 2014 Common Boston neighborhood and design festival (Valerie Fontana Shulman, 619-987-9060)
Design Museum (Boston) -- $3,000 to support Extraordinary Playscapes, a public exhibition showcasing examples of modern playground design. (Sam Aquillano, 617-600-8204)
Discovery Museum (Acton) -- $3,000 to support a hands-on exhibition and public programming using KEVA Planks to educate thousands about architecture, engineering, and construction. (Neil Gordon, 978-264-4200)
Energy Necklace (Newton and New Bedford) -- $2,500 to support teacher training and student curriculum focused on the environment, sustainability, and renewable energy. (Susan Israel, 617-964-8483)
Hawthorne Youth and Community Center (Roxbury) -- $3,000 to support Architectural Notecards from Highland Park, in which neighborhood youth learn about local architecture and create an exhibit of notecards to share with the community. (Samantha Sadd, 617-427-0613)
Learning by Design (Boston) -- $5,000 to support replicable, hands-on, professionally led workshops on architecture and design for families across Boston. (Polly Carpenter, 617-391-4023)
South Boston Catholic (Boston) -- $2,300 to support the expansion of art and architectural education curriculum, which will focus on students creating a permanent mosaic mural depicting local architecture. (Deborah Putnam, 617-268-2326)
Preservation Worcester (Worcester) -- $3,000 to support Afterschool Architecture Club: Building Sleuths, an architecture-education program for middle school students at the Worcester Arts Magnet School. (Susan McDaniel Ceccacci, 508-754-8760)
Urbano Project (Boston) -- $2,000 to support The Emancipated City: Reimagining Boston, a long-term garden instillation, co-created by teens and professional artists, featuring performances and screenings regarding social justice issues. (Stella Aguirre McGregor, 617-983-1007)
VSA Massachusetts -- $3,000 to support the Parkolation Project, a student-designed mini park, which gives students the opportunity to design and build innovative, green, public space. (Wilhelmina Peragine, 504-669-0871)
Youth Build, Inc. (Boston) -- $5,000 to support The Designery, a workshop teaching at-risk youth about urban composting and an exhibition featuring composting units built by the students. (Ken Smith, 617-455-8887)
