Illinois Institute of Technology

Dean's Letter

Welcome

We’re excited to learn of your interest in Illinois Institute of Technology’s College of Architecture, one of the world’s best-known architecture schools. Studying here means joining students from 43 countries and 38 states, while adding to a nearly century-long legacy of invention, rigor, and leadership. Our alumni and faculty designed the world’s first super-tall buildings, crafted some of the most iconic furniture of the twentieth century, and pioneered an entirely new way to study architecture. We’re still on the leading edge—and you can be too!

Studying at IIT Architecture means hard work and high expectations, for sure. But it also means personal growth and the chance to reinvent the world around you every day.

Sound good? There’s so much more. Here, you’ll work in one of the great creations of modern architecture: S. R. Crown Hall, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, perhaps the most influential architect of the twentieth century. Your professors will be renowned architects, landscape architects, engineers and designers. You’ll build prototypes in one of the largest, best-equipped fabrication labs of any architecture school in North America. You’ll manipulate the latest software, do research in our 15,000-volume library, join professional organizations structured just for architecture students, and live on a campus that is a modern masterpiece and part of the National Register of Historic Places.

Oh, and you’ll do all of that in Chicago, the city where skyscrapers were invented and modern American architecture was born. You won’t have to look at publications to find the work of Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Frank Gehry, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, Jeanne Gang, and so many more–they’re all right here. And so is work by our faculty and alumni, like Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s Sears (now Willis) Tower, John Ronan’s Poetry Center, and Carol Ross Barney’s Riverwalk. In addition to remarkable architecture and landscape architecture, Chicago has so much culture, from art to sports to food to music, that you could spend several lifetimes experiencing. This is the great American city, and it will be yours to explore as an IIT Architecture student.

I hope this sounds exciting to you—it sure is for us. Why not visit us online at arch.iit.edu to explore our facilities, curriculum, and work, and stay up to date on our latest news. Until then, thanks for your interest. We look forward to you joining the Illinois Institute of Technology tradition.

Best,
