About This Position

POSITION SUMMARY

The Architectural Team, Inc. (TAT), an award winning, Boston-area master planning, architecture and interior design firm, seeks a dynamic, creative, and client service-oriented Director of Interior Design to lead the team’s next phase of growth. The perfect candidate will have an entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to leverage their design expertise to provide outstanding service across a broad range of sectors, lead project design strategies, spearhead process and protocol refinement, and amplify TAT’s creative expertise.

As the leader of a growing team, this individual will work collaboratively with firm principals, marketing, finance, and project teams to develop and define the department’s role within the practice. This forward-thinking leadership position requires exceptional communications skills, active mentoring, interpersonal dexterity and the ability to set a firm-wide quality standard.

Active in business development, client presentations, and the financial success of projects, the Director of Interior Design will work alongside the principals of the firm to reinforce the integration of interior design services with the architectural staff. This role oversees all interior design responsibilities and requires an advanced understanding of the design and construction processes. The Director of Interior Design will work with senior management to establish and perpetuate a design vision within TAT.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

Direct report to principals.

Primary Responsibilities

Responsibilities include overseeing and mentoring the interior design team; directing projects from initial planning and research into project context and competitive sets through the design, construction and installation phases; managing all financials such as budgeting, invoicing, purchasing, and proposals; generating new business; interfacing with clients; and recruiting and hiring.

Additional responsibilities and demonstratable capabilities include:

  • Maintaining exceptional client relationships, project delivery, and profitability
  • Proficiency in all related technical programs of an interior designer including, but not limited to, Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office Suite, BlueBeam. Newforma experience a plus
  • Leading the conceptual phase of all projects and overseeing final results
  • Mentoring junior staff
  • Knowledge of overall and market/sector specific design trends and the ability to implement creative and on-trend design solutions for a wide range of project types
  • Knowledge of all applicable design challenges, constraints, strategies, and codes related to the firm’s target sectors, including, but not limited to, multifamily, senior living/assisted living and historic adaptive reuse
  • Track record of managing and monitoring multiple projects simultaneously
  • Exceptional interpersonal, presentation, verbal, and written skills
  • Facilitate team meetings, boost morale, and build culture to support TAT’s values
  • Work collaboratively with Senior Project Managers to establish productive working relationships with both long-standing local clients and new national clients for seamless delivery of interior design services across all sectors
  • Develop a team of designers with expertise in areas that advance TAT’s business strategy for growth
  • Provide principals with strategic direction related to the interior design team and their growth potential, market expansion, and business development
  • Ensure client satisfaction through a consistent, measurable feedback process
  • Responsible for managing the interiors team to ensure that projects meet deadlines, deliverables, and budgets
  • Communicate regularly with clients to proactively address their concerns, questions, and strategic project needs
  • Explore intelligent and thoughtful solutions to challenges that arise with the interiors team, among the firm’s multidisciplinary teams, and with clients
  • Organize and develop systems for the advancement of team members, the growth of ID within the firm, and for the benefit of firm-wide development, effectiveness, and efficiency
  • Knowledge of and experience in collaborating with various consultants within the interior design industry including material and finish reps, art consultants and FF+E purchasing agents
  • Travel required

ROLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in Interior Design from an accredited institution
  • 7 to 10 years of professional design experience
  • NCIDQ registration
  • LEED AP IDC preferred or another similar accreditation such as NCARB
  • Demonstrated design excellence across multiple sectors
  • Ability and willingness to work in an entrepreneurial fashion to expand TAT’s practice
  • Demonstrated ability for team and client leadership
  • Proven ability to manage and mentor staff
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Participation in marketing and business development
  • Ability to foster client and team confidence
  • Desire for growth and diversity in design process
  • Thorough knowledge of building codes and systems, and accessibility requirements
  • Ability to develop and lead in the standardization of systems, policies, and procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of legal and liability issues
