About This Position

Responsible for leading the programming, design and execution of laboratory projects for university and private sector clients. Needs to communicate effectively with clients/user groups to and work with project teams on a range of laboratory project types, sizes and delivery models. Also needs to represent the firm as a technical expert and thought leader in the marketplace.


  • Bring technical knowledge and lead the laboratory programming of academic and private sector research facilities.
  • Provide technical planning expertise and leadership for laboratory facilities in the areas of design, fit-out planning, equipment planning, MEP systems integration and laboratory casework and FF&E specifications.
  • Assist in the design development, modification and/or review of laboratory planning concepts and solutions.
  • Assist in developing project scope, plan, and services and during the contract process. Translates planning concepts into comprehensible terms for clients, designers and project team members.
  • Assist in establishing overall project budgets and milestone schedules in coordination with project managers, architects and project engineers.
  • Communicate planning concepts to project teams, both verbally and through graphic and written reports.
  • Develop planning concepts for project documentation and construction.
  • Anticipate and develop solutions to technical and design problems following established standards.
  • Apply appropriate quality assurance and quality control methods throughout project.
  • Develop and maintain strong and collaborative relationships with existing and potential clients.
  • Actively mentor and develop the skills of EYP staff in laboratory planning and design.
  • Actively seek new knowledge in the design and planning of scientific spaces for research.
  • Speak or participate in professional conferences or other events related to area of laboratory programming, planning and design.
  • Write articles to be published in professional journals or major trade publications.
  • Conduct learning sessions for EYP staff to broaden staff knowledge in areas of applicable expertise.
  • Leverage design talent and other intellectual content to sign-up new work/projects.


  • Professional degree in Architecture.
  • 10+ years' experience in science, engineering, academic and private sector research laboratories.
  • Demonstrated creativity, passion and interest for the planning and design of laboratory facilities for the sciences and engineering.
  • Have developed highly advanced field of knowledge and/or expertise and is recognized outside of EYP as an authority on the subject of scientific research.
  • Regular active participant, as speaker, moderator, and/or organizer in professional conferences and other events related to their field of expertise.
  • Published, preferably in professional, peer reviewed journals, major trade publications, or books.
  • Regarded by their peers as a resource for advice, peer reviews, and instruction (whether through conferences, symposia or teaching in an academic setting) in their area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of laboratory planning, design, construction documents, construction administration and project construction cost control for lab facilities.
  • Knowledge of sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines.
  • Experience with clean rooms, GMP production areas and vivarium design is valuable but not required.
  • Professional Licensure strongly preferred.
  • LEED Accreditation strongly preferred.
