About This Position
SMMA is currently seeking a Project Architect (7+ years experience) to lead K-12 school projects within our integrated design practice - a dynamic mix of architects, interior designers, landscape architects, site and building systems engineers, design technologists, researchers, planners, and doers.
SMMA in a nutshell:
We provide design services for a variety of markets which we've organized into five studios including Commercial, Science & Tech, Higher Education, K-12 and Government. Each studio is matched with engineering partners dedicated to the same studio mission. We believe in our multi-disciplinary work model and remain committed to enhancing opportunities by capitalizing on an agile and iterative integrated design workflow. As architects, this studio structure allows us to dive deeply into dedicated market-based knowledge and micro-mentorship, while simultaneously participating in "cross-training" between studios to make sure we are all learning from each other firm-wide. With all this diverse expertise packed within a firm size of only 180 makes us the "largest small firm or smallest large firm" you'll ever experience.
Why is this role important for SMMA’s work?
As a Project Architect in the K-12 Studio, you'll be leading projects partnered with a Project Manager handling more of the scheduling and accounting aspects, freeing you up to focus on developing the design and collaborating with project stakeholders, in-house engineering partners and outside consultants, and most importantly in command of the design team. Within the architecture discipline we strive for a healthy balance of seasoned experts, mid-level architects, and fresh graduates. This role is critical to keep the team focused on this complex project type and mentoring junior staff is expected.
Relevant experience and mindset:
- Bachelor's or Professional degree; Master’s degree preferred.
- 7+ years professional experience, some dedicated to K-12 projects
- Architectural licensure required. LEED, WELL, or other sustainable accreditations a plus
- Familiar with a BIM-centered workflow and other common digital design and management tools
- Capable of building relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
- Committed to pursing excellence in written, visual, and verbal communication
- Flexible, proactive, and optimistic
What does SMMA offer you?
SMMA is a place unlike any other. It’s a place where you help to define design opportunities and solve complex challenges for our clients, our organization, and our industry working alongside thoughtful individuals from many disciplines who lead with curiosity, empathy, and optimism. We nurture professional growth in many ways including a year-long volunteer Mentor-Protégé program that pairs junior professionals with senior leadership to share knowledge and build deeper relationships. We have ARE and LEED study groups, provide research opportunities through our internal 'IQ Program' (innovation and quality), and many external professional development and training opportunities. We strive to promote a fast-paced, team-oriented, and fun culture that fosters relationships and creative growth and are proud to have been named a 2018 Emerging Professional Friendly Firm by AIA New England.
Digital portfolio must be submitted with the application for consideration.
