BSA sustainability statement
Architects have a unique responsibility for the sustainability of the built environment. This responsibility extends beyond the design of high performance buildings to include project siting and impacts on transportation, water, land, air, and habitat.
All projects can and should minimize energy and resource demands to combat climate change and provide healthier communities.
We advocate laws and standards that promote not only sustainability but also improved integration of the built and natural environments.
The BSA will be a leader in educating designers, contractors, owners, and the public about inspiring and environmentally responsible design, construction, operation, and renovation of the built environment.

AIA 2030 Commitment Reporting Project
AIA 2030 Commitment
Beginning in 2014, BSA Committee on the Environment members aggregated and analyzed anonymous data from participating Boston-area firms.
The Commitment
The AIA 2030 Commitment is a growing national initiative that provides a consistent, national framework with simple metrics and a standardized reporting format to help firms evaluate the impact design decisions have on an individual project's energy performance. To truly rise to meet the energy reduction goals of 2030, we have to apply the principles of sustainable design to every project from its inception and early design through project completion and ongoing building operations–not just those projects where our clients wish to pursue third party green building certification. The profession can’t meet radical building energy use reduction targets one project at a time and architects are embracing the challenge at hand by thinking differently about sustainable design.

UIA 2050 Commitment
The International Union of Architects has made a similar commitment globally. At the roundtable in August 2014 in Durban, South Africa, 124 countries adopted the commitment. It pledges that future design will be carbon neutral by 2050.

Chicago’s AIA 2030 Commitment
Chicago started collecting data from firms in the city back in 2010. They started with 6 offices and now their data includes 15 offices.
