Housing Innovation Workshop

On Friday, September 15, 2017, the City of Boston’s Housing Innovation Lab, MIT's Real Estate Innovation Lab, and the Boston Society of Architects/AIA co-hosted a "Developing Differently" workshop, pulling together a select group of architects, developers, academics, and activists in an intensely collaborative session. Participants came to the day ready to break down the silos between their areas of expertise in order to facilitate idea generation. The goal of the workshop was to build up new ideas across disciplines, in order to develop the built environment differently. Over the course of six hours, the 55 participants created 40 ideas, gave nearly 800 pieces of feedback, pitched eight ideas, and “built up” four finalist ideas. Bringing all of these community members together across their divided fields of expertise allowed them to share grievances around the development process, build relationships, and form strategic connections for their work.

As a follow-up to this initial workshop, a “Build it Out” workshop will be held sometime in the fall of 2017, focusing on bringing the finalist ideas closer to pilot implementation.

The takeaway ideas and flow of the day were captured in the below infographic. Moments and key quotes from the day can also be viewed on Storify

To learn more about how the BSA Foundation is making an impact in communities, please come to BSA Space for a one hour “tour” of BSA Foundation programs. On the tour, board members and volunteers will tell stories about how Foundation programs, and the power of design, are positively changing the lives of real people. Meet the BSA Foundation meetings are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month. Events are free, but seats are limited. Check for upcoming dates and to reserve your seat.
