Mentoring One-on-One

On Thursday, September 19, 2013, at BSA Space, the Women in Design (WID) Mentoring Subcommittee once again gathered a talented group of women in one room for its Mentoring One-on-One event. Modeled after “speed dating,” the event had mentors stationed around the room, poised to answer questions and offer advice to the eager group of young professionals in attendance. Rotating to a different station every four minutes, the women soon fell in to lively, informative discussions.

One of the more popular topics was about career paths, specifically the not-so-direct path to landing a leadership position at a firm. The number of mentors coming from different backgrounds confirmed there is not just one road map to success. Also discussed were ways to venture into various careers within the field of architecture and how to work on the more interesting project assignments within a firm.

The discussion not only proved to be beneficial to the mentees but also allowed the mentors to gain more insight into what is on the minds of young, ambitious design-industry professionals. Business cards were exchanged, and new professional connections were made. The evening wrapped up with drinks, appetizers, and more lively discussions.

This event was sponsored by Stantec, Structure Tone, Shepley Bulfinch, Copley Wolff Design Group, and Finegold Alexander + Associates.

Participating mentors included Ellen Anselone AIA (Finegold Alexander + Associates), Rebecca Berry AIA (Finegold Alexander + Associates), Barbara Carpenter Assoc. AIA (Tsoi/Kobus & Associates), Lorraine Finnegan AIA (SMMA/Symmes Maini & McKee Associates), Lisa Brothers PE (Nitsch Engineering), Katie Faulkner AIA (NADAAA), Emily Grandstaff-Rice AIA (Cambridge Seven Associates), Stefanie Greenfield AIA (Cambridge Seven Associates), Stephanie Hubbard (SiteCreative Landscape Architecture), Diana Nicklaus-Garton AIA (Stantec Architecture and Engineering), Michelle Apigian AIA (ICON Architecture), Suzanne Robinson (Vanderweil Engineers), Colleen Ryan Soden (Soden Sustainability Consulting), Jennifer Taranto (Structure Tone), Catherine Truman AIA (Ann Beha Architects), Carole Wedge FAIA (Shepley Bulfinch), Laura Wernick AIA (HMFH Architects), Teresa Wilson AIA (Steffian Bradley Architects), and Shelley Vanderweil (Vanderweil Engineers).
