Briefing: Greater Boston Zoning & Housing Study

Greater Boston’s housing crisis has emerged as one of the most pressing policy challenges for the region and is the subject of several bills under consideration at the Statehouse.
However, there is no regional data about local zoning and permitting practices that affect housing production. The last (and only) in-depth study was conducted for 187 cities and towns within 50 miles of Boston, published in 2005 by the Pioneer Institute and the Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston. Now the Massachusetts Smart Growth Alliance, which AIA Massachusetts is a Steering Committee member of, in collaboration with other real estate and housing organizations, have contracted with the lead researcher on the initial study, Amy Dain, to conduct a partial update for 100 cities and towns surrounding Boston.

You are invited to a briefing on Ms. Dain’s preliminary findings, which focus primarily on zoning and permitting of multifamily housing and accessory dwelling units.  Her presentation will provide fresh data on what is happening “on the ground” in these cities and towns.
