Bringing Life to Streets: Boston's Tactical Public Realm Guidelines

CultureHouse: Bringing Pop-Up Social Infrastructure to Boston

The Boston Tactical Public Realm Guidelines, introduced in September 2018, demonstrate how to make delightful gathering places for people within our public street space. The guidelines provide policy guidance for coordinated efforts by City staff and community members to create tactical plazas, parklets, sidewalk cafes, and street murals, in existing underutilized public space, and in space reclaimed from redundant traffic infrastructure. Meet authors and implementors of the Guidelines in this panel discussion:

  • Vineet Gupta, Director, Boston Transportation Department
  • Jessica Robertson, Associate, Utile
  • Jacob Wessel, Public Realm Director, City of Boston
  • Alia Hamada Forrest, Executive Director, Roslindale Main Streets

This session kicks off a pilot collaboration between the City of Boston, BSA, local business owners and other community stakeholders to provide businesses design and permitting assistance to launch outdoor seating and other programming this year. Learn more about this exciting partnership - and volunteer opportunities to help bring life to streets in neighborhoods throughout Boston.
