INTER/SECTIONS: Shinique Smith

BSA Space and the BSA Foundation are proud to host the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy's second in a series of moderated, artist-based discussions and events entitled INTER/SECTIONS. On Friday August 21, the series resumes with a special event featuring world-renowned artist and current Greenway Wall at Dewey Square muralist, Shinique Smith.

Smith will premiere a new performance video piece commissioned by the Greenway titled Gesture III: One Great Turning. Featuring local and nationally acclaimed Kairos Dance Theater, Gesture III: One Great Turning was filmed over the course of two days in front of Smith’s mural, Seven Moon Junction, with the use of drone video cameras. Inspired by the composition of Smith’s mural design, this piece also draws on astrology, alchemy, mythic love poetry, and the energy of the Greenway. The evening will include a candid conversation between Smith and her most important collaborators in art and life: installation artist Gary Pennock; author and executive coach Vkara Phifer-Smith; and assistant professor of the History of Art and Architecture at Brown University, Courtney J. Martin.

This program is presented by: The Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation, ArtPlace America, The Lynch Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, The Fund for the Arts, a public art program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, Bank of America, Massachusetts Cultural Council, and Boston Cultural Council. Media sponsorship by: Boston Globe, CBS WBZ-TV, Improper Bostonion and Art New England. Additional thanks to: KAIROS Dance Company and Above Summit.
