Urban Design lecture: The Rose Kennedy Greenway’s Parcel 12

The BSA Urban Design Committee is teaming up with the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy to jump-start a dialogue about ideas for Parcel 12, a 1½-acre undeveloped, unadorned patch of grass bisected by two highway ramps and a chain-link fence. Should this centrally located site be a dynamic “urban lab” to explore public park uses and activities? How could the site’s design strengthen connections along the Greenway corridor? What role do its edge conditions play in shaping the parcel’s future?

This underused parcel presents an exciting opportunity to engage fresh thinking about the role of public space in the city. The site’s engineering and circulation constraints require pushing the envelope beyond traditional design approaches. It is a worthy challenge for Boston’s wealth of creative talent, knowledge of emerging architecture and engineering technologies, and appreciation of human-centered design in urban placemaking. Help us capture this energy to explore innovative ideas, both temporary and permanent, for this important public space on the Greenway.
