How can we visualize what we can hear but can't see? Better yet, how can we *auralize* how design affects the sonic experience? Auralization is like visualization for your ears. Most of us have a lifetime of accumulated listening experiences that inform how we experience the world. An acoustical simulation can bring that listening experience to bear, allowing an intuitive understanding of acoustical design concepts that can otherwise be cumbersome to communicate textually or even visually. Ben Markham is the Director of Architectural Acoustics and a Principal Consultant at Acentech in Cambridge, MA. He has an avid interest in acoustics computer modeling and simulation - technology that Acentech calls 3DListening. In addition to consulting on a wide range of arts, education, institutional, residential and civic projects, Ben also teaches acoustics at the architectural schools at MIT, Harvard, and Cornell University.
