Please join the City of Boston and the BSA Foundation, and the Boston Society of Architects/AIA for the announcement of the Northern Avenue Bridge Ideas Competition winners, hear jury members discuss inspiring ideas that emerged from the competition, and celebrate all the participants.

The Northern Avenue Bridge Ideas Competition was co-sponsored by the City of Boston and the Boston Society of Architects/AIA. It invited designers and nondesigners alike to propose ideas for the future of the Northern Avenue Bridge that respect history, enhance mobility, and create an extraordinary destination. The competition is now closed to submissions.

In total 133 submissions were received, including 99 graphic designs and 34 essays. View the gallery of great work submitted by fellow citizens. Vote for your favorite entry for the People's Choice Award by clicking the heart icon on the submission, and learn more about the competition jurors here.

First opened in 1908, the Northern Avenue Bridge has served pedestrians, cyclists, automobiles, and freight trains throughout its life. Unfortunately, the continuous exposure to salt water and air caused extensive corrosion of the steel. Over a year ago, the bridge was closed to all travel and must be removed for safety.

With the continued growth of Downtown and the South Boston Waterfront, Boston needs a crossing here—a new Northern Avenue Bridge—one that enhances mobility, celebrates history, and creates a destination for the next 100 years. Ideas from the Competition will help shape a Request for Proposals that the City of Boston Public Works Department will issue this summer for the design of a new Northern Avenue Bridge.
