Our July HRC meeting will feature a visual presentation by the renowned restoration and decorative arts studio John Canning & Co. LTD; the program will focus on design-assist services and treatment techniques involved with the restoration and renovation of Building 10 on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) campus. Looking at a selection of restoration projects, including the Baker Library Great Rotunda restoration, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the historic architectural finishes, pre-construction services, investigations and restoration options that typically comprise the implementation stage of a project.
John Canning & Co. specializes in finishes, including plaster restoration, decorative finishes, gilding, historic woodwork, stone, murals and more. In addition to the firm’s trade services, the company provides assistance with planning and design services, budgeting and specification support, as well as historic paint analysis, plaster surveys and other consultation. A Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) and an Association for Preservation Technology (APT) Recognized Professional, David Riccio is an integral part of John Canning & Co. in his position as a Principal and President of the company. He has remained a visionary leader for the entire Canning team for over 20 years.
David is an industry-recognized expert on historic flat and ornamental plaster, as well as decorative painting techniques, gilding, and glazing, and he has developed multiple innovative solutions for complex restoration conditions. He has consulted for architects, construction managers and owners for historic and landmark buildings throughout the United States. A champion of education, David generously shares his extensive knowledge of the architectural arts with clients and professionals by offering presentations and leading workshops.
Carl Jay is Director of Historic Preservation at Shawmut Design and Construction, a $1.5 billion national construction management firm with offices in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Providence, Las Vegas, New Haven, Miami, Chicago, Irvine, and West Springfield. The company is 100% employee-owned.
With 45 years of experience in the construction industry, Carl is one of the nation’s most well-respected preservation experts. He has made a lifelong study of historic buildings, the architects who designed them, the construction methods, and even the tools used to build them. Carl’s knowledge of historic restoration and renovations stems from hands-on experience with numerous projects. A contributor to numerous industry conferences including ABX, SCUP, and Traditional Building, who currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Boston Preservation Alliance, he has also lectured on historic preservation through BU’s Preservation Studies program.
