CoHABITATion asks, In the current biodiversity crisis, how can architecture be better designed to support habitat?
Using urban bird species commonly observed in downtown Boston as a design study, the CoHABITATion team developed and fabricated a series of building facade explorations to better support habitat potential. Research, including population dynamics and species life cycle traits, were foundational in designs that address desirable bird species' needs while repelling those seen as an urban nuisance. With building code glazing requirements, human comfort, and materiality in mind, the module facades include niches for nesting, resting, and spontaneous vegetation.
