Art often challenges the status quo, and nothing challenges a structural engineer more than art that challenges the laws of physics.
For these types of projects, structural engineers help with several challenging questions: If people can interact with this, what loads should we design for? How do we work with non-standard geometries? How do we design with non-standard materials? What are the right discussions to have related to client or public expectations?
We will explore these questions through several art and sculpture project examples and discuss how participants can apply these themes to any project with unique elements.
Objectives include:
Engineering sits at the core of ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of building occupants and users. The same can be said for the importance of structural engineering when it comes to creating art, such as landscape structures or pavilions. These non-standard projects present their own set of risk and life safety issues. Developing a deeper comprehension of these considerations and strategies to implement solutions is key to ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of all individuals who may pass through or interact with these structures.
