This presentation will review significant changes to the 10th edition of 780 CMR (2021 International Building Code) with consideration of the draft Massachusetts amendment package. One of the biggest changes expected in the 10th edition is the allowance for large-scale mass timber buildings. As a result, this presentation will also review the compliance requirements for mass timber buildings in detail.
Objectives include:
- Identify key building code changes that will appear in the 2021 & 2018 IBC and 10th edition 780 CMR.
- Explain the implications of the code changes for design and construction.
- Review the new mass timber construction types and the allowances for large-scale mass timber buildings.
- Understand the requirements for mass timber buildings with regards to fire ratings, noncombustible membrane protection, concealed spaces, and more.
The ability to comprehend the implications and make the most of the significant IBC code changes is important to ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of building users and occupants. This is particularly important in the case of new building materials, such as mass timber, where clients or engineers may be less familiar with this building material.
