When starting a renovation project, there is much to understand about the existing building. One "unknown" is the structure: what is the original structure? What condition is it in? Can it support the modifications this renovation needs? How much work (cost) will that be? In this presentation, we will discuss early information to look for and the structural code triggers to be aware of. We review existing structural materials and what opportunities or challenges each present. We will also discuss in situ testing and when that can be an option.
Objectives include:
The focus of this course is the early stages of a renovation project, specifically the steps and strategies for understanding all the dimensions of the existing structure and structural systems as well as the impact of structural upgrades on existing building codes. The ability to recognize these facets of renovation projects and implement best practices is vital to ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of building occupants and users.
