Healthy buildings can improve occupant well-being, which can be quantified through metrics such as productivity, collaboration, reduced sick days and self-report. This presentation walks through a WELL-certified building to provide a broad overview of the WELL Building Standard and illustrate design and policy interventions to support wellbeing. We discuss pre- and post-occupancy studies of the case study building, referencing relevant scientific studies and recent public health trends. Finally, we review certification costs for a healthy building and how the benefits to an organization can be measured financially.

Objectives include:

  1. Cite two examples of public health trends that could be addressed by healthy building design.
  2. Define three examples of design interventions that could promote health in the built environment.
  3. In the WELL-certified case study building, identify at least two health benefits to the building occupants that were measured in the pre- and post-occupancy studies.
  4. Explain at least one example of how the case study building promotes health through organizational policies.

The focus of this session is the WELL Building Standard within the scope of public health and occupant well-being. The ability to explain this standard, alongside policy interventions, coupled with understanding how to implement the best practices from research studies is an important part of ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of building occupants and users.
