Fee Negotiation Series
Join the IES Boston and Rhode Island Section and the Boston Society of Architects Project Management Roundtable for a co-hosted series focusing on fee negotiations. Part 1 will cover negotiations between architects and their clients, Part 2 will cover negotiations between architects and their consultants. Conversation and insights will be relevant to all disciplines working in the built environment. We look forward to hearing a diverse range of perspectives. We hope you can join us!
Part 2: Architects and Consultants
Part 2 of the Fee Negotiation series will focus on negotiations between architects and their consultants. Representatives from various disciplines will discuss their experience determining the appropriate fee for their services, and the factors that impact these conversations.

J Ryan Flynn, PE
Mechanical Engineer, HVAC and Controls, BALA
Ryan has over 15 years of professional experience in the HVAC engineering and design field including building energy modeling, system design/selection, and construction administration. Projects include existing building renovations, additions, and new construction with and without phasing. His project expertise includes K-12 Schools and sustainable design.

Stephen Garvin
President, Samiotes Consultants
Stephen has been with Samiotes Consultants since 1993 and has been a great asset to the company ever since. So much so, that Samiotes had the pleasure of making Stephen President in 2001. In his dual roles as head of the Civil Department and President of the firm, his responsibilities include growing and diversifying the Client base, overseeing overall design quality and standards, leading high profile projects through design and permitting, and improving efficiencies in all aspects of the business. Additionally, he is recognized by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection as an approved Soil Evaluator and is recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council as a LEED Accredited Professional. Stephen is also the Chairman of the Sudbury Planning Board.

Carrie Havey
Principal, The Green Engineer
Carrie Havey, LEED Fellow, is a Principal with The Green Engineer and has over 13 years of experience as a sustainability consultant. She works collaboratively with project teams to provide sustainable design advice and LEED guidance throughout all project phases. She has been the sustainability consultant on multiple project types, including: higher education facilities, k-12 schools, healthcare, labs, municipal buildings, and commercial interiors. Carrie has a background in city planning and landscape architecture, and is passionate about designing for a sustainable built environment.
Carrie has served on USGBC’s Location and Planning Technical Advisory Group (LP TAG) and was the chair of the Sustainable Sites Technical Advisory Group (SS TAG). She was a founding member of the Massachusetts Chapter of the USGBC and a former member of Built Environment Plus Board of Directors.

Glenn Heinmiller
Principal, Lam Partners
Utilizing his expertise in producing high-quality electric and daylighting solutions with minimized energy use and negative environmental impact, Glenn has designed daylight and electric lighting systems for a diverse range of projects, including research facilities and labs, academic/administrative buildings, student and faculty residences, athletic facilities, student centers, performing arts centers and libraries. As Chairman of the IALD Energy and Sustainability Committee, he manages the IALD’s participation in sustainability initiatives, and the review of and contribution to standards, regulations, and rating systems development. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and served as a USGBC Subject Matter Expert. He is the former instructor of the lighting design course at the Boston Architectural College, and lectures and writes on the subjects of light pollution control, lighting codes, and lighting energy efficiency. Glenn is also an expert on Massachusetts energy codes and utility incentive programs.
