The ‘R’ Word - Retreating from Sea Level Rise and Storm Surges

The Climate Adaptation Forum, a collaboration of the Environmental Business Council and the University of Massachusetts Boston Sustainable Solutions Lab, held “The ‘R’ Word: Retreat, Relocation and Climate Resilience” to a sold out crowd. The topic of retreating has many aspects. If we start with the personal ones - the ones that would affect you and me - we can feel profound empathy for others who would need to cut roots and ties in order to move, quite apart from having to give up property and find a new home. There are governmental and non-profit and private groups which are studying, sharing and creating new tools and techniques for the many different types of residents along the US shorelines. Architects need to be aware of these in order to play a helpful role as more and more people will need to migrate to new homes and new communities.
