The American House: Traditional to Modern, Modern to Traditional

For most of the twentieth century, architects and critics have debated among themselves the seemingly conflicting approaches to the design of houses: traditional or modern. Modernism is often the default position for design magazines and schools, yet there is also a strong underlying interest in traditionalism, particularly within the public at large and high-end clients. Is one approach really better or have we wasted our energy debating. Is it time for the two sides to recognize each other?

This course, taught by prominent architectural practitioners, critics and educators, will examine both design philosophies in an attempt to establish a possible new, more useful direction for the future of the American home.
