Building Enclosure Council: Planning for Flood Resiliency—Turning Obligations into Opportunities

Every year, more buildings and facilities are put at risk of flood damage due to climate change. Assessing and addressing flood risk is complex, and involves assembling a qualitied team and planning for short and long-term capital improvements. This presentation will examine resilient systems, building renovations and site planning principles for managing flood risk at a few different facilities to demonstrate ways of assessing the impacts of climate change, planning for solutions that prioritize flood risk, protecting museum collections and identifying other opportunities. The following case studies will be presented:

• Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History
• Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum
• Planning for a new US Embassy in Dili, Timor-Leste

Ed Rice AIA has led award-winning master planning and renovation projects for cultural and academic landmarks, integrating resilient and sustainable design principles and new technologies into historic buildings. Ed was the project manager for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History Master Plan, and previously managed a Master Plan for the Museum of Arts, Boston, which included a development program for their campus. Ed holds a Master of Science Degree in Architectural Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Bachelor of Architecture Degree from Cornell University.
