COTE: Existing Building Design for Sustainability on a Budget—Anonymous Hall

Named for alumni and friends who have quietly supported the college over two centuries, Dartmouth's Anonymous Hall reuses and adds to a vacant 1960s library in the heart of the medical school quad, transforming it into a vibrant administrative and social center for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and a communal hub for the north campus. The 32,995-square foot project transforms an isolated edge of the College into a well-scaled, inviting North Quad. The initiative generates an accessible, seamless link between north campus and the historic green and main campus, allowing it to be shared with undergraduate sciences.

The approach to sustainability for Anonymous is centered on the use of a proven kit-of-parts, familiar technologies, and approaches for energy reduction. Anonymous Hall uses five highly effective strategies to reduce the building’s energy footprint within a tight construction budget. The renovation reuses the concrete and steel structure of the original 1962 Dana Hall Biomedical Library building, implements highly insulated walls and roof, makes use of ultra-high-performance glazing, uses an efficient space-saving mechanical system, and incorporates a photovoltaic shading canopy to reduce the energy used in construction and reduce predicted energy use by 90% compared to baseline.
