While work continues to review, refine, and modify base code language from the 2021 edition of the International Building Code (IBC), the timing is right to understand the impact and implication of some of those expected changes. The session will focus on changes made in both the 2018 and 2021 edition of the IBC that are likely to be included in the 10th Edition.
Model codes such as those from ICC are updated on a three-year basis and incorporated by adoption at the state and local level. Massachusetts is fortunate to have a group of dedicated volunteers that have put forth a plan to move to the currently available edition of the IBC-2021. Myriad changes in both the 2018 and 2021 codes were prompted by, or the result of, movement towards sustainable design, ongoing recognition of changing social norms in the health care and long-term care environment, significant fire events, and recognition of emerging technologies that introduce unique hazards to the built environment.
