The AIA’s Code of Ethics for Architects includes guidelines on sustainable design as a requirement in each project. Architectural leaders agree that sustainability is as important as the programmatic and other technical aspects of all buildings. As we continue to design new and renovated environments we are challenged and dedicated to integrating sustainability into planning and design; particularly energy and greenhouse gas reductions. The AIA terms this dedication as follows: “…Members should recognize and acknowledge the professional responsibilities they have to promote sustainable design and development in the natural and built environments and to implement energy and resource conscious design. Members should set ambitious performance goals for greenhouse gas emission reduction with their clients for each project….”.

After a brief framing of the subject matter, this session will include facilitated discussions about what many architects believe to be responsible design, as it relates to energy conservation and our carbon footprint. As leaders in the building design arena, we believe architects should be leading the charge to reduce energy and carbon emissions within the embodiment of the building design.
