Hundreds of guests filled BSA Space to bid on artwork that was carefully curated by a jury with diverse professional backgrounds. The initial call for art went out last summer, with over 100 submissions by artists and architects throughout New England. The call asked for work with an architectural element to it, essentially the “art of architecture”. The purpose was to highlight the beauty of architecture and to create a unique event for the art-loving community of Boston. After difficult deliberations, the jury selected over 40 items to be auctioned off.

With great food, music and company, the night of the auction was an exciting event for all. Some of the artwork included sketches, renderings, photographs and even small 3D printed building models. Pamela de Oliveira-Smith, the BSA’s Managing Director of Communications, kicked off the live auction by emphasizing the importance of the work of the BSA Foundation. She inspired the crowd to “place your highest bid” by reading children’s responses to the 2018 KidsBuild! event held at BSA last year. One child wrote “I get to be what I want to be when I grow up.” Chris Ward of Bid for your Benefit, the evening’s auctioneer, engaged and energized the crowd. He encouraged the group to raise their paddles for the six live auction items, including a limited edition signed print by Rem Koolhaas, an airplane tour over the city of Boston, and a tour of the MIT Museum archives. All art and experiences for the silent and live auctions were generously donated to the BSA Foundation.

The auction was one small way the BSA Foundation is able to raise funds towards its mission to build a better Boston. In addition to ticket sales and auction revenue, the event was also sponsored by Autodesk.
