Earlier this summer (August 9–August 11, 2017), executives from AIA Chapters around the country met at AIA Portland for CACE 2017, a weeklong series of workshops during which component leaders shared strategies and critical elements for fostering individual and chapter success. Leadership, decision-making, board management, and other issues of professional development were explored throughout the week. Highlights included walking tours, a visit to Portland wineries, and a reception at AIA Portland Center for Architecture. Participants were welcomed by Robert Hoffman AIA of AIA Portland and 2017 CACE president, Heather Koury Hon. AIA. Thomas Vonier FAIA, 2017 AIA President and Damon Leverett AIA, Managing Director, AIA Diversity and Inclusion, provided first day insight. Robert Ivy FAIA was on hand to introduce opening Keynote Speaker, Dr. Shirley Davis, CSP, President and CEO, SDS Global Enterprises, who addressed Implicit Bias and Its Impact on Leadership and Decision Making. This topic was later explored in a breakout session, during which the BSA's own Emily Grandstaff-Rice FAIA, set the stage by contributing video commentary, which may be watched here. 2017 CACE vice president, Eric White of BSA Space, introduced the closing Keynote, Greg Bell, author and leadership coach.
