The following are some overall key determining factors when considering a potential facility or typologies use an emergency treatment center:
Life SafetyHealthcare Occupancies where patients will be sleeping or sedated have code requirements with respect to egress, sprinkler coverage, and fire alarm.
Clear Floor SpaceBed separation ranges from 5 feet per FGI and 6 feet per DPH guidelines.
Patient PrivacyPrivacy between patients is a DPH requirement. Cubicle curtains or portable screens are potential solutions.
Soiled/Clean Separation Separation of soiled and clean routes is important. Ideally, there is a service elevator to handle soiled waste streams and routes to disposal areas that are separate from clean routes and areas.
Width of Corridors Bed and stretcher movement needs to be accommodated. PPE zones are ideally separate from patient bed areas.
Observation Ideally the facility has the ability to accommodate observation through glass doors or cameras of patient treatment and centralized observation areas.
Support StagingFor Safe/secure rooms to prep and store medication and equipment
Medical Gases1 Oxygen outlet* 1 Vacuum outlet (Or portable vacuum pump)
*Centralized oxygen delivery requires central storage in fire rated room and piping. Individual bottles with local connections are otherwise imagined.
PowerIn-room power for medical equipment. Power for charging equipment is an alternative.
Backup generator or emergency power circuits are ideal.
Tel/Data connectivity is essential.
Sinks/Plumbing The recommended frequency of sinks for PACU is 1 per 4 patient bay/cubicles. This could be waived with hand sanitizer.
Cleanability of MaterialsSmooth, solid, non-porous surfaces are needed to maintain clean, disinfected facilities.
Negative AirflowNegative pressurization with air exhausted directly to the exterior enables more effective and safer separation of populations within healthcare facilities. If space allows, temporary vestibules can enable supplemental negative pressurization via HEPA filtration systems.
