The Massachusetts Legislature enabled Massport in 1956 as an independent authority that operates Logan International Airport, Hanscom Field, the Port of Boston and other development properties in South and East Boston. Massport employs approximately 1,000 staff.

Its mission is to:

“connect Massachusetts and New England to the world, safely, securely and efficiently, never forgetting their commitment to their neighbors who live and work around its ports and facilities. Massport is expanding Boston’s global reach by increasing the number of nonstop domestic and international flights from Logan Airport. They are advancing Massachusetts’ working maritime tradition by protecting thousands of good-paying blue-collar jobs connected to the Port of Boston. Moreover, they are demonstrating their commitment to being a good neighbor to those who live and work near Massport facilities by strengthening their community engagement efforts.”

Conditions of Membership/Duties of the DSP

• DSP members are appointed for a term of two years and may be reappointed for no more than one successive two-year term;
• DSP members serve without compensation. The amount of time required to attend board meetings has averaged four to five sessions per year which last about two to three hours each;
• Actions typically undertaken during meetings include shortlisting, interviewing and selection of A/E firms;
• The average preparation time needed above and beyond meeting time is approximately four to five hours to review submittals and prepare comments before the meetings;
• No member of the Board may participate in the selection of a designer for a project if the member or any member of his/her immediate family has a direct or indirect present or future financial interest in the selection of that designer or in any way will benefit financially from there.

As with any similar public service, it is essential to maintain the integrity of the Board. Members are requested to minimize and preferably avoid the incidence of applications by their own firms before the Board and to review in advance with the State Ethics Commission any instances of conflict that might arise.

Candidates should have an active license, be members in good standing with AIA, with a well-rounded experience in building design and construction.
