Grants 2010
Architects and allies provide $37,160 in public-education grants. The BSA Foundation, (formerly the Boston Foundation for Architecture), is pleased to announce its 2010 grant awards. These grants help underwrite community-based K-12 and other educational programs across Massachusetts that focus on elevating public awareness of and participation in the planning, design, and construction of our communities. The 2010 recipients and the contact person for each are:
Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center (Boston) -- $5,000 to support Chinatown Built/Chinatown Building and engage local youth in planning for Chinatown's future, including the design of a branch library. (Giles Li, 617-635-5129 x1070)
Common Boston (Boston) -- $2,000 to support Common Build, a design-build competition benefiting community-based nonprofits, as a central feature of the 2011 Common Boston neighborhood and design festival (Justin Crane, 617-816-3777)
Discovery Museum (Acton) -- $4,000 to support the development of Dream Green: Reinvent your House, an interactive exhibition enabling visitors to explore green housing design and materials and concepts of insulation, conduction and energy conservation. (Denise LeBlanc, 978-264-2000 x20)
Dorchester Historical Society (Dorchester) -- $5,000 to support a summer program in which local youth will research neighborhood history and architecture, and develop and conduct tours of Field's Corner (Earl Taylor, 617-293-3052)
Flocks (Cambridge) -- $4,000 to support educational programming and student involvement related to the public art installation Flocks (Carolina Aragon, 617-755-4950)
Girls Inc. (Worcester) -- $2,000 to support Material Girls, an architectural design and construction education program for girls that builds skills in math, engineering and design and introduces girls to historic and green architecture (Heather Lillis, 508-755-6455 x34)
Hawthorne Youth and Community Center (Roxbury) -- $3,660 to support Discovering Landscape Architecture, enabling local youth to learn how landscape architecture enhances the urban environment, and to create an exhibit to share with the community (Samantha Sadd, 617-427-0613)
Learning By Design (Boston) -- $3,000 to support architecture and design education for teachers and K-12 students in various Massachusetts communities (Jan Ham, 508-528-4517)
North Bennet Street School (Boston) -- $5,000 to support the development of a manual arts training curriculum for middle school students in Boston Public Schools, introducing hand skills, tool use, construction materials and methods and their impact on design. (Miguel Gomez-Ibanez, 617-227-0155)
Preservation Worcester (Worcester) -- $2,500 to support architecture- and preservation-related programming at the Worcester Arts Magnet School, including the production of a brochure highlighting Worcester architecture for distribution in the community. (Susan McDaniel Ceccacci, 508-754-8760)
Stearns School (Pittsfield) -- $1,000 to support Blueprint Academy, a design workshop for students in 4th grade through middle school. Students learn basic drafting and Sketch-Up as they prepare floor plans and elevations for a single-family home. (Lynne Griffin, 413-499-9554)
