Grants 2012
The BSA Foundation, (formerly the Boston Foundation for Architecture), is pleased to announce its 2012 grant awards. These grants help underwrite community-based educational programs across Massachusetts that focus on elevating public awareness of and participation in the planning, design, and construction of our communities. The 2012 recipients and the contact person for each are:
Boston Family Boat Building (Boston) -- $2,500 to support existing boat building program activities and the planning process to expand the program to other Boston schools in need of experiential building activities. (John Rowse, 617-595-8557)
Boston Harbor Association (Boston) -- $4,500 to create a smartphone app Boston's Changing Waterfront that will overlay reality with site-based historical photos and descriptions of the now-transformed neighborhood. (Julie Wormser, 617-482-1722)
Boston Public Library (Boston) -- $3,500 to digitize a subset of the Charles J. Connick & Associates Archives which will enable architecture students and the public to view and make use of a rare special collection. (Louisa Stephens, 617-536-3886)
Danish Kurani A+UD (Cambridge) -- $3,500 to support Classroom Co-Creators, a K-12 project focused on engaging students and teachers in the creation of their learning environment, while raising public awareness for the needs of individual schools. (Danish Kurani, 404-452-9415)
Common Boston (Boston) -- $2,000 to support Common Build, a design-build competition benefiting community-based nonprofits, as a central feature of the 2013 Common Boston neighborhood and design festival. (Mary Hale, 617-391-4097)
studio2sustain (Newton) -- $5,000 to train teachers who will orient youth toward the environment and renewable energy through the Energy Necklace Education Project, a hands-on, collaborative process of designing and building Energy Sculptures. (Susan Israel AIA, 617-964-8483)
Hawthorne Youth and Community Center (Roxbury) -- $2,000 to support Getting to Know Greenhouses, a project for 6-12 year olds who will create an exhibit featuring a scale model of a greenhouse, photos, drawings, and writings for visitors to the Isabella Stewart Gardner. Five Colleges Inc. (Holyoke) -- $3,000 to support the exploratory phase of the Five College Holyoke Design Center intended to provide opportunities for design education for college students as well as Holyoke K-12 students. (Nancy Goff, 413-542-4010)
Learning by Design (Boston) -- $3,500 to support architects and teachers who will engage underserved Boston students in sustainable design/build activities based on the architecture of their city. (Polly Carpenter AIA, 617-461-1168)
MassArt (Boston) -- $4,500 to support Designovate, an architectural design project in which Artward Bound students (grades 10 - 11) explore the intersection of art, design, sustainability and spatial change under the guidance and mentorship of MassArt Department of Architecture staff. Merrimack College (Boston) -- $2,000 to support ThinkFest, a STEM project that exposes middle school children to the wonders of engineering, science and technology through hands-on activities. (Mary Noonan, 978-837-5145)
Urban Neighborhood Design Alliance (Boston) -- $4,500 to support City/Build, a curriculum enrichment program for Boston public high school students that introduces the fields of architecture, engineering, development and construction (David Silverman AIA, 617-426-5401)
Worcester Arts Magnet School (Worcester) -- $2,000 to support Building Sleuths, an after school program for middle schoolers who are interested in learning more about the role of architects and engineers in developing/and preserving the built environment. (Susan O'Neil, 508-799-3575)
