Grants 2014
The BSA Foundation is pleased to announce its 2014 grant awards. These grants help underwrite community-based K-12 and other educational programs that focus on elevating public awareness of the planning, design, and construction of our communities. The 2014 recipients and the contact person for each are:
Asian CDC (Boston) – $2,500 to support A-VOYCE, a summer youth leadership program that teaches concepts in community-driven planning processes and Chinatown history, while youth leaders provide Chinatown walking tours with an updated catalog of real estate and place making projects. Boston By Foot (Boston) – $2,500 to support scholarships for underfunded schools to attend Boston By Little Feet Tours (engaging and thought-provoking walking tours that introduce children to architecture and urban design). (Samantha Nelson, 617-367-2345)
CareerPoint (Holyoke) – $2,500 to support youth participants learning about architectural history, historic building restoration, and create content for both a physical and virtual tour of Holyoke City Hall. (Doug Gadaire, 413-322-7141).
CDRC (Boston) – $3,500 to support the adaptation of the Living with Water design charrette into a series of neighborhood workshops and related activities in East Boston. (Gretchen Schneider AIA, 617-686-4362)
Coelho Middle School (Attleboro) – $3,500 to support Let’s Go Outside! Designing a Community Park, a school-based enrichment program that will enable 100 middle school students from the Attleboro area to develop and share their design ideas, via exhibit and digital media production, for improvements to South Attleboro Veterans Memorial Playground. Community Boat Building (Boston) – $3,500 to support hands-on, interdisciplinary curriculum of experimental learning projects to under-served Boston Public School students. (Katy Schramm, 617-428-0155)
Future Prep 101 (Boston) – $1,500 to support a half day seminar that nurtures the next generation of creative thinkers by providing Massachusetts teens with college and career prep for jobs in the design industry. (Aisha Densmore-Bey 857-225-5107)
Hawthorne Youth (Roxbury) – $3,500 to support Build Up! Build Down! Build All Around!, a hands-on project that engages youth in a design-sequenced curriculum, with respect to buildings and materials. A photo exhibit, that documents student design workshops, will also be produced. (Samantha Sadd, 617-427-0613)
MassArt Community Build Studio (Boston) – $3,500 to support community design workshops that lead into MassArt’s community/build course, culminating in the construction of garden elements to support ongoing educational and neighborhood-building activities at the new Woolson Street Community Garden. HighWaterLine (Boston) – $2,000 to support the creation of a participatory public art project that creates a community working to build climate resiliency in the face of the changing urban environment. (Eve Mosher, 646-492-1314)
Preservation Worcester (Worcester) – $2,200 to support a replicable after-school program engaging middle school students to envision themselves in roles that develop and preserve the built environment. (Susan McDaniel Ceccacci, 508-754-8760)
Sociedad Latina (Roxbury) – $3,500 to support 150 middle school students with experimental, hands-on, STEAM programming, in a youth-led, urban design, capstone project, presented to family and community members, (Alexandra Oliver-Davila, 617-442-4299x117)
Somerville Neighborways (Somerville) – $2,000 to support Neighborways, a resident led initiative that will transform quiet, residential streets into a network of family-friendly, low-stress corridors that prioritize people over cars. A how-to manual will also be drafted to share with other communities. (Mark Chase, 617-290-3876)
Southeast Asian Coalition of Central MA (Worcester) – $3,500 to support Youth Street Project, an experimental learning program that uses design, sustainability, building, and tactical urbanism to transform a street, creating bike lanes and increasing walkability. (Anh Vu Sawyer, 508-791-4373)
The Discovery Museums (Acton) – $3,000 to support Backyard Builders, a year-long, building-themed program targeting all ages and cultures, integrating STEM learning and collaborative, multimedia building projects. (Sarah Hetherington, 978-264-4200)
Wentworth Institute of Technology (Boston) – $3,500 to support Co+Build and several small design/build projects that will improve the educational environment within three Boston public schools as well as the acquisition of knowledge and skills of Wentworth students. (Erik Miller, 617-989-4993)
