About This Position

TRIA is seeking an experienced lab planner to join our Science and Technology design team on a full-time basis. Ideal candidates will have a background in multiple phases of lab programming, planning, feasibility studies, master planning, and detailed lab design and documentation. Specific work experience can include research spaces for academia or commercial interests, learning and teaching spaces with complex furnishings and infrastructure, electronics labs, medical device manufacturers, data centers, GLP and GMP facilities, and similarly complex research and manufacturing environments.

Alternatively, life sciences professionals with a background in scientific research, laboratory management, or operations and facilities management interested in applying their skills to laboratory design will be considered. Relevant experience for these candidates could include laboratory setup or relocation, equipment management, and scientific product development and obtaining voice of customer.

The lab planner will work closely with and support senior lab planners on a project basis by preparing programming documents and room cards, preparing workflow diagrams, by participating in client meetings, by participating in equipment surveying, and by translating conceptual designs into schematic designs. The lab planner will support the entire design team on a project basis from schematic design on through all phases of work to ensure the project specific goals and intentions are met as the documentation is completed. Specific responsibilities during these design phases includes equipment placement, production of detailed lab plans and related details as well as oversight of others doing the same, coordination with MEP and other consultants, and ensuring compliancy with life safety and regulatory agency code requirements for laboratory spaces. The lab planner will also support the broader science and technology team needs by contributing to and maintaining shared databases for planning metrics, equipment characteristics, benchmarking standards, and other similar information.

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • Proficient in programs including Revit and AutoCAD (training will be provided for non-design professionals)
  • Comfortable producing hand sketches
  • Team-oriented, excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to lead a team
  • Ability and willingness to mentor junior staff in programming, room cards, equipment placement, and lab design
  • Experience and ability to work in a fast paced, client/design oriented environment
  • Licensed professional preferred (AIA registration, NCARB certification)
  • AutoCAD v. 2015 or above (training will be provided for non-design professionals)
  • Revit v. 2015 or above

  • MS Office Suite – Excel, Word, MS Project


  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree of architecture, prefer licensure track, or Bachelor’s Degree in a branch of the Sciences


  • 5-10 years of experience in lab planning or the Life Sciences industry
  • Experienced with and knowledge of design and construction drawings
